Review: Cars by Stephen Bayley

A couple of weeks ago, Octopus Publishing sent over Cars, a wonderful book about the history and culture behind car design by Stephen Bayley (and photographed by Tif Hunter). The book is simply amazing from the moment you look at its bold and simple cover. When you first touch its velvety cover and feel the weight of the pages in your hands, you know this is going to be a significant addition to your coffee table and/or design library.

Cars focuses on 86 of the cars Stephen Bayley believes have contributed the most to contemporary car culture and design — starting with the 1908 Ford Model T and ending with the 2003 BMW 5 Series. In between those years, Bayley shows off cars from Ferrari, Volvo, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, Jaguar, FIAT, Bentley, Porsche, Lincoln, Cadillac, Lotus, Buick, SAAB, Audi, and plenty others. Each car chosen comes with a short paragraph about how the design came to be and what struggles it may have faced when it was debuted. In addition, Stephen writes about how some of the cars were highly influential in showcasing a country’s sense of sex, symbolism, power, and style.

In Cars you will see some vehicles with very classic designs that are rarely seen on the road anymore these days. In fact, most of these cars featured here are either in some museum or in somebody’s garage hidden from view. When photographed so beautifully by Tif Hunter, I can see just how these cars influenced modern car design and still do even to this day.

If you’re thinking of getting any book for a car or design enthusiast, you might want to add this one to the very top of your list. It’s put together exceptionally well and I’m sure everyone you share this with will enjoy it just as much as I do!

Cars: Freedom, Style, Sex, Power, Motion, Colour, Everything normally retails for $65, but Amazon.com is selling it for $40 which is a fantastic deal! Snag it now!
