Review: Stacked Decks

Quirk Books sent over a copy of Stacked Decks: The Art and History of Erotic Playing Cards last week and I’ve been pretty captivated by it ever since. The book is the showcase of The Rotenberg Collection which is headed by Mark Lee Rotenberg who has been collecting vintage erotica for the past 25 years. His hunting has led him to be the owner of this massive collection featured here which includes erotic playing cards from the early 1800′s all the way until today.

But don’t think that this book is all about nudes and sexual photos. It’s a deeper look into how some countries dealt with a rapidly changing sexual culture during the 19th and 20th centuries. While today we may be desensitized to the sort of pictured material and artwork shown within, the playing cards shown in the book were once so raunchy that they were illegal and banned in some areas which might explain the huge popularity of these wolf decks, stag decks, or nudie playing cards.

The book goes in chronological order from the 1800′s until modern times and shows full-color photos of the nude playing cards in various collections. Knowing that Mark Lee Rotenberg spent over 25 years collecting these items should tell you already how incredible the collection is and I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

The book normally sells for $24, but it’s on Amazon.com right now for $18. Pick one up and enjoy!
