Urban Velo reviews the $150 Mongoose Cachet from Walmart

A couple of weeks ago, the internet was abuzz about a new $150 bike from Walmart that some were going so far as to call “the end of cycling”. Sure, it’s a cheap bike from a place that some despise for their business practices, but I would hardly call it an end to cycling as anything that gets more people on a bike is considered good in my book.

If you were wondering how this bike performs and comes out of the box, Urban Velo has your answer. They managed to get their hands on one of the budget-priced bikes for review and for the most part they say that this could be the bike that gets people hooked on cycling for the rest of their lives. They stress that this probably wouldn’t be good for hardcore riding (and definitely not for trick riding) but for those that just want a bike that goes from point A to B without much hassle and set-up, this is going to look like a great choice.

Overall, they were impressed and given their review, I think I am too. Read their full review here.

One Response to Urban Velo reviews the $150 Mongoose Cachet from Walmart

Thanks to you Herman, after your initial posting I seriously considered buying this bike. After a few days I finally was lucky to get my order in. And at $150 with free Site-to-store Walmart shipping my ride arrived in less than a week. Taking it out of the box and assembling was not a difficult task at all. Even a novice handy person should be able to accomplish this with just a few simple tools. Urban Velo was right, the seat post was totally wrong. I removed all the reflectors, kick stand, chain guard and dropped at least 5 lbs from the bike weight. I have left the stickers on only because I can’t yet to bring myself to (i see a nice placement for a couple of Doobybrain stickers you sent me). I am 5’7″ and the stand-over is a bit uncomfortable but once you get use to it its virtually not an issue. Overall this is a nice replacement for my well worn brakeless singlespeed that I built a few years ago. This may be the best $150, err $160 with tax I have spent in a long time. And at that price I have no problem running this all over Denver. Oh, and over at the WM site they say that they are Out Of Stock Online. So thanks again Herman. DF*
