Video of dead rat found in can of Chef Boyardee

Consumerist has a nasty video allegedly showing a dead rat found in a can of Chef Boyardee. If you’re eating right now, you probably don’t want to watch the video above.

The mouse had to have gotten into a partially opened can. The fact that it was NOT covered in sauce should be a dead (excuse the pun) giveaway that it couldn’t have “been in the can” at the factory. That the remaining sauce and spaghetti was still moist and pliable indicates that the can could not have been exposed to the air for very long, perhaps only a couple of days. My guess? Some how the seal on the EZO lid was broken (In transit? In the store? At the purchaser’s home?), the mouse crawled in to have some lunch, and got stuck.

Actually, what you’re really looking at is plain old mold. The EZO lids on these products (and many others similar to it) are notorious for breaking, allowing the mold to form. It’s not something that happens a lot, but it does happen often enough. What looks like a cute, fuzzy mouse is just plain old mold. It could have occured anywhere along the line, from the production facility up to and including the consumer’s pantry.

As with any processed foods, it pays to check them out when you buy them. i have found “leakers” sitting on grocer’s store shelves, just waiting to be picked up by an unsuspecting shopper. While “fresh is best” might be a good practice to live by, sometime “convenience is king.” Just need to be careful!
