Frazil Ice at Yosemite National Park

May 23, 2010 @ 3:07 pm

Frazil ice at Yosemite National Park is one natural phenomenon most people don’t get to see in their lifetime mainly because of lower visitor numbers during the colder weather. Frazil ice is formed when the mist from a waterfall crystalizes and flows down the river bend. Sometimes it moves slowly and at other times it moves quickly.

What’s neat about this event at Yosemite Creek is that the frazil ice can literally stop at any moment and appear to look like solid snow. If you come across frazil ice though, be careful, because it usually is not solid and will not carry your weight.

Oh, and if you watch until the end of the video, you’ll see a live moving image of Horsetail Falls (the waterfall that looks like gold).
