18th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew

On this day 18 years ago, Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida causing a total of $26 billion in damage (about $41 billion in 2010 dollars). It is the 2nd costliest hurricane to strike the East coast of the US, with only Hurricane Katrina in 2005 being more costly. I wrote a post on last year’s anniversary about some of my memories and thoughts from that time — you can read (or re-read) it here. I guess 18 years is a long time, but I still remember Hurricane Andrew very distinctly.

I was about 8 or 9 years old when Andrew hit. I was living in Jacksonville FL at the time. It was the first time, in a very, very long time that snow ever came to Jacksonville. We thought something was on fire close-by and dropping ash. It was snow being whipped around in the strong winds. Crazy stuff.
