Radar tipped me off to this provocative photo series by Jeff Sheng that captures United States service people literally living in the shadows of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Taking a portrait of somebody who can’t reveal their face is always a difficult situation but I think Jeff does it well here.
For those who aren’t familiar, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is the military’s way of prohibiting gay and lesbian personnel from revealing their sexual orientation and also prohibiting active service if they are known to be gay/lesbian.
If you go to this link, you can see a couple of Jeff’s photos from his book Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Volume 1. The book is now on sale through his website and a second volume is currently in the works.
