Review: Catfish

No I’m not talking about the fish. I’m talking about the film! I went to go see it last night and it was very surprising to say the least. But not in the way you would probably think. If you’ve seen the movie trailer you might be led to think that Catfish was a thriller or horror film. But it’s not. And beyond that, I really can’t tell you much about the film because it would ruin the surprise. The surprise, in reality, is what the film is actually about. It’s not scary at all and it’s just weird when you find out what in the hell is going on.

The film follows the 8-9 month life of a man named Yaniv Schulman as he begins an odd relationship with an 8-year-old prodigy painter. Over time, Yaniv meets the rest of the 8-year-old’s family and he begins a romantic relationship with the girl’s older sister “Megan”. The documentary follows Yaniv as he explores his emotions through this relationship and ends up going to visit the family in Michigan. And then things get really weird and entertaining. It kills me that I cannot explain this movie any further but I really enjoyed it. It was at times heartfelt and funny and definitely unlike any documentary I’ve ever seen.

I don’t think it’s necessarily worth $10.50 at the theaters, but if you’re up for a totally different movie experience, maybe Catfish is something you’d like to catch during its limited release. Or you can just wait for the DVD. But by then, maybe somebody might have told you the ending…

I really liked the film and its odd story. I really did!

I saw it earlier this year and really enjoyed it too. I totally think it’s worth 1050 at the cinema.

i saw this movie, too. i went into it knowing nothing, and assumed it was a horror film. I honestly thought that someone was going to die because of the trailer. But yeah, totally surprising twist of events. i liked it.

I saw it this weekend. I agree…it’s a really good and surprising doc. After I saw it a friend told me to watch the 20/20 special (http://abcnews.go.com/2020/video/inside-catfish-paintings-11837656) which is almost an hour long and shows even more than the film! They interview Megan! Can’t say much more, but if you want to know more definitely check out the video.
