Upside-down photo above by Herman Yung
Question for all you readers who have an iPhone out there. Does anybody have an issue with iPhone photos being sent upside down when emailed or posted to an external application? It doesn’t happen on every photo and I haven’t pinpointed why it only occurs on some images, but I’ve been having it happen to me more and more lately. I swear I’m taking the photos right-side up, and they even show up right-side-up in my photo album on the phone, but once I send it out they get flipped 180. It’s so weird and very frustrating and it seems like it’s not an isolated occurrence.
Can anybody suggest any fixes for this?

I believe there’s EXIF data that tells the orientation of the image which is why it shows correctly in the iPhone’s photo album, but some readers don’t use the header and show it un-rotated.
It happens to me all the time when I’m posting to Craigslist. It’s frustrating.
it’s frustrating. it happens sometimes and other times the photos come out correct.
thanks to this posting I noodled around some more and bought “Exif Editor” from the Mac App store for $9 and after several trial changes that didn’t work, used their Remove All Metadata, wola Craiglist was right side up – this after Photoshop and Preview inverting the images had NOT worked
I just had this problem. I fixed it by opening up the picture in Preview and rotating it to the left or right (twice) so that it was upside down, then saved it. Then I opened up the same picture and rotated it back up and saved it. This worked every time for each photo.
I was going nuts trying to post photos I’d taken on my iPhone onto a Craigslist ad. They were all getting loaded upside down. Thanks so much for your fix, Luke. It worked! Hooray!
Excellent…this worked perfectly.
Luke, Your trick worked..
thank you..
hooray! thanks for the fix.
I opened picasa (google’s photo editing tool) and viewed the pics that were taken with my iphone and were located on my desktop. Then I exported the pics from the picasa window into a new folder on my desktop. When I used the exported pics they were not flipped around. Hope this works for everyone.
