Rebecca Davis posted this short clip about how Mah Jongg, while being a traditionally Chinese leisure game, seeped its way into Jewish women’s heritage in the 1930′s and has since become a staple of some Jewish community functions. The video above shows a Mah Jongg marathon event being held at the Museum of Jewish Heritage where many women with presumably Jewish backgrounds are engaged in games of Mah Jongg.
To tell you the truth, I had no idea that Mah Jongg held such a cultural significance in Jewish communities. Growing up, just about everybody that I saw playing Mah Jongg was Chinese and it’s kind of neat really to see this game being played by non-Chinese folks so naturally.
