Matteo Castronuovo gives several good reasons to ride your bike around Milan (and well, any city) in this video called God Bless Losers from First Floor Under. The video shows Matteo at work while he cruises around town on his bicycle faster than vehicular traffic on most occasions. He says the experience of riding a bike allows him to take in the city of Milan quickly and much more easily than if he were driving around.
