Jamie Wieck has compiled a fantastic list of 50 things every graphic design student should know. As you might expect, the list is straight-forward and to the point, offering great advice to follow in most circumstances in one’s career.

After reading the list, I agree with just about everything except maybe #14: Never take an unpaid internship. While I agree that internships should be paid, even if it’s very little, in my experience even unpaid internships eventually lead to bigger and better things. If you’ve honestly tried to get a paid internship and it just hasn’t worked out, an unpaid one isn’t necessarily a bad thing (it’s just not ideal).

As for the points that stick out and truly do make a difference, be mindful of #12: Hand-write addresses (this is absolutely vital if you’re just starting out; and also #28: Never work for free.
