Fire ants can form floating rafts to stay afloat in water

This is straight-up the wildest thing I’ve seen all day. Neatorama posted this video proof of fire ants forming a very strong “raft” out of their bodies when they are put in situations where water is rising around them. The ants link to each other and stay afloat even when pressed down upon by a scientist!

What’s even more amazing is that the ants can even become submerged as a group and still survive because they are able to form a ball that traps air bubbles between their bodies. The videos below show this in practice. Simply incredible!
