This is so wonderful! Dutch design firm HIK Ontwerpers installed a slide at Overvecht Station as a part of their ongoing urban installation project series. The slide isn’t just for decoration — the Dutch railway company encourages passengers to use it if they are running late or just need a quicker way to get into the station. I love the official name of this thing — they call it a “transfer accelerator“. We need these at some of the deeper subway stations in NYC! The Pop-Up City has a video if you want to see it in action. [via]

Couldn’t you imagine people in suits and ties and carrying briefcases going down that slide? They’re in a hurry, and so… zing! And doing it with a serious, adult expression, no less. It’s kind of a funny mental image right there.

This makes me think of transport tubes like in the Jetsons or Futurama. It’s only a matter of time!

Why on earth would they have the base of the slide level with the ground? Everyone knows that slides are set 18″ off the ground, so you don’t have to kill yourself trying to stand up!
The architects need to visit more playgrounds. I love this idea, and would use it every chance I got.
