Walking through the forest in Manhattan

You know, I feel really stupid right now reading Scouting NY’s experience of walking through the 28th Street Flower District. Why? Because he makes note of a building just down the block from me that I never seemed to have noticed before — at least not in its entirety. I think I never took notice of this great big red and green building because I normally walk on the same side of the street rather than from the opposite side where I would get a better view of it. Scouting NY notes that this building may have been used as a theater at some point and that doesn’t surprise me given it’s shape and odd main entrance with double staircases.

I have to say though that while it may be nice to visit the “forest” on 28th Street, living here and traveling through it everyday is a pain in the ass. The plants take up all the space on the sidewalk and if you’ve got somebody walking slow ahead of you, forget it — you might as well just call ahead to the place you’re going and tell them you’re going to be late.

Used to work at 28th and 7th as a porter of sorts for a fashion company. It took a few months but I became a master of weaving through the jungle undergrowth towards Broadway with 100 pound crates of sock samples. 28th is definitely worth a stroll through for people who want to see an echo of pre-condo Manhattan
