Is there some sort of basic filming trick I need to know to capture snow the way Preston has here? I can never get snow to show up like this in my videos…
Anyway, this is a nice video from Preston Kanak of the Montana wilderness.

The snow in the start is added on after effects, it is a plugin called trapcode particular.
How are you shooting snow? Maybe try a faster shutter speed. Also, if your scene is more lit behind the snow, use a light to illuminate your side of the flakes
Shoot with high shutter and rack your focus to about 1ft. Love the after effects compliment but definitely don’t have the skills to make the snow look that real
.
Sorry! I just thought of that because it started on black, didn’t think of a fading.
We worked on that movie called cashback where we used trapcode, its obviously a bit different as the snow is “stopped” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CfhqRpEQvk&feature=related
But there is an example of regular snow falling made on after effects https://vimeo.com/35226677
I saw also a amazing one with a snowstorm a bit like yours thats why I thought of it, but I cant put the hand on the link! Amazing work though!
Congrats
