So I’m thinking of trying this in the next couple of months when I get some time off of work. I’ve always wanted to drive across the country and see as much of the “middle” as I can. I love America but I feel like I only get to see the 2 coasts and a part of me really wants to scope out the weird parts in the center. Hoping to do this sooner rather than later.
You should definitely choose Route 2, Chicago is a great place to visit!
too bad these routes don’t cover memphis :(
don’t go thru nebraska/iowa. i did that drive once and literally thought that those two states would never end. trust me. go another route.
I disagree with Rustin – if you want to see the middle, take I-80 through Nebraska/Iowa. It’s not just flat land – there are a couple of hills.
yo, did this a couple years back, one of the best experiences of my life. love the middle, be sure to stop by wyoming.
Make sure you check into the most awesome places you can on foursquare! Can you imagine your map pinned througout the whole USA?
I’d die.
PS.: just added you on Foursquare, feel free not to accept it!
Whichever route you choose, you probably won’t regret it at all. I made the trip from NC to LA almost 2 years ago and it was one of the coolest experiences ever. (I even made it a 2nd time a few months later with a friend). Try to go the route with the least big cities, thats what I’d say. Chicago is a cool place to visit, but it’s likely you’ll have an excuse to go to Chicago for a reason, versus some small town city in southern Illinois. Make it about getting to the next small destination, not about reaching the end of the trip… it’ll be worth the time.
If you choose routes 1 or 3, you have a place to stay in St. Louis.
There is plenty to see and do in Iowa! If you head through Des Moines on route 2 hit me. I can show you around town or give you a list of places to see or try.
