I’ve always noticed that they spray a lot of water during Space Shuttle liftoffs right before the engines ignite. I’ve always wondered why they do this and it turns out there’s good reason. The water is part of the Sound Suppression Water System which, as its name suggests, suppresses the sound released by the orbiter during takeoff and in effect reduces the acoustical energy bouncing around the area. If not done, the acoustical energy has the potential to damage the craft on liftoff.
