I remember seeing this PSA when I was growing up. I never really knew much about the ad or the woman featured in it, but I found out earlier this week that she had passed away.
The woman shown in the “Voicebox” anti-tobacco ad is named Debi Austin. She reportedly smoked 2-3 packs A DAY and ended up having a hole cut in her throat so that she could breathe. In the anti-smoking ad, she is seen smoking a cigarette through the hole in her throat while vocally refuting the findings of big tobacco companies who say that tobacco is not an addictive substance.
In the video below, she recounts her experience with tobacco and why she became an anti-tobacco spokeswoman.
One more video inside showing the original Debi Austin PSA.
