The Verge has published a very wonderful post on Shigetaka Kurita, the creator of the Emoji and the numerous variants based on Kurita’s original creation in the mid ’90s. For the most part, Kurita is an anonymous character, but his contribution to modern communication via email and text is hard to ignore. Everywhere you look now there are Emoji/emoticons and there should be a lot of thanks going to him for making short communication easier to understand and interpret. I’m sure he’s saved and created a lot of heartache, breakup, and miscommunication over the last few decades.
ALSO: Take a look at the background for that post as well as the comments section. It’s kind of funny and cute.
