One of the things I thought very weird when I first moved to LA was that locals seem to pronounce their neighborhood names incorrectly. How so? Well, as you might already know, many of Los Angeles’ neighborhoods are named by Spanish settlers which means that those neighborhood names should be as close to the Spanish pronunciation of the word as possible. But in places like Los Feliz, many locals seem to say it like “Los FEE-lus” rather than the more correct “Los Fe-LEEZ”.
I guess it’s not a huge deal, but there are other neighborhoods that catch me off guard still and even though people know that I’m not technically wrong, it still feels incorrect (but really, it’s right). Thankfully, the Spanish words are making a comeback now with more non-LA folks moving to the city.
