It’s amazing when you think about it. It only took about 8 years for our country to send a man into space and walk on the surface of the moon (JFK announced our country’s intention on doing so on May 25, 1961 and we landed on July 20-21, 1969). In those 8 years our country collectively came together and made scientific history in record time. I can’t think of anything the government has done lately on this monumental scale (other than war, I suppose) that brought our country together in such short time.
Today marks the 44th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, sending 3 astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins into space to do what at that time seemed impossible. In fact, all 3 astronauts had every reason to believe that they would DIE in space which to me makes the thought of their bravery and mission even more heroic.
I obviously wasn’t alive when this all happened but there’s no doubt that their mission inspires many generations after them. To go into space, land on the moon, and come back to tell about it…that’s just incredible. Take some time to think about that.
