The Grand Jury Room

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Until August 8th, this is where I go every weekday afternoon. There’s probably some legal issue with me taking these photos, but I’ll deal with that when it comes along.

Unlike a trial jury where you decide whether a person is guilty or not guilty, a grand jury only decides whether a case is fit for [...]

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Starbucks released a complete list of the approximately 600 stores it plans to close by 2009, and about 9 (or 10) of these will be in New York City.

The Journal of Urban Typography

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

The Journal of Urban Typography is full of hand-painted, slightly skewed, and very odd signs from [mostly] the New York City area. Have a look around, some of the signs are quite pretty. [via]

A photo of me petting a big horse

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

The term “big horse” is redundant because gosh darnit, ALL horses are big.
This one’s name is Mattie (or Maddie) and it patrols the district known as Chinatown/LES. If you see it on the street, say hello and give it a wave.
If you’re handling a jackhammer, please stay away. Thanks!

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Artist D.Billy (or David William) is doing something pretty awesome with balloons and artist tape. He’s taking those materials and fastening them onto walls around New York City to represent the sound that objects make. [via]
Once he has the “inflatable graffiti” on display, he takes a photograph of the scene and just leaves it to [...]

A Dollar Store on Mulberry Street

Monday, July 14th, 2008

I bought these Bellagio Bee playing cards for $1.
I don’t know if this is widely known information or not, but there’s a fantastic dollar store on Mulberry Street in Chinatown between Canal Street and Bayard Street. The store is called A Dollar Store. Like all great Chinese places, the name tells you exactly what it [...]

The pitfalls of driving and parking in New York City

Well, this sure sucked.
