I absolutely love how this interview with Kiya Babzani of Self Edge is laid out on Hypebeast. I’m normally not a fan of paginated interviews like this, but when the site it is on is clean with very large photos to supplement the interview, I can let down my internet guard just a bit to enjoy it.

Plus, the interview itself is an awesome look into how one of the industry’s best minds thinks about his work/hobby and how that translates into wanting to share that passion with everyone he meets. If you haven’t already, check out the interview here with Kiya and then visit the Self Edge/3sixteen outpost in NYC at 157 Orchard Street.

Big Dick enters The New Museum

Big Dick enters The New Museum from David Livingston on Vimeo.

Beyond absurd only begins to describe New York artist David Livingston’s latest stunt in which he enters The New Museum on Bowery with a 6-foot flaccid stuffed penis. He gets kicked out very quickly which only makes this stunt funnier.

Video of the 3rd Ave El in New York City

March 16, 2010 @ 1:21 pm

This is pretty awesome. Check out this old archive footage of the 3rd Ave El in Manhattan.

The 3rd Ave El was an elevated transit line that was part of the NYC rapid transit system up until the mid 1950’s. It ran along 3rd Ave all the way up to the Bronx and was later replaced by bus lines when it was disassembled and decommissioned by the MTA. If you look at the map below, you can see the 3rd Ave El as a thin line with circle dots on the East side of Manhattan.

Shooting street photography with Bruce Gilden

March 13, 2010 @ 11:12 am

When I was first introduced to Bruce Gilden’s street photography years ago, I remember thinking about how it must be incredibly hard to do what he does so well. His images show him really up-in-your-face with his camera and that’s particularly why I find his images so engaging. It makes me think about what can be pulled off on the streets of New York and how I really shouldn’t care about what people think about being photographed in public. I should just go ahead and do it. Watching this video from WNYC of Bruce Gilden going about his work is inspiring. I hope to one day be as bold as he when photographing strangers on the street.

“If you can smell the street by looking at the photo, it’s a street photograph.” – Bruce Gilden.

Photo of derailed No. 4 train in New York City Subway

I was reading up New York City Subway accidents and I came across this photo from August 1991 showing a derailed No. 4 train just north of Union Square. Apparently, the motorman was drunk at the time and going way over the speed limit in that particular tunnel. He was later convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in jail (5 people died in the accident).
