The Pelican Project: gallery of old Pelican book cover designs

by Doobybrain

Things Magazine has a great online gallery of old Pelican book covers from the 1930’s until the 1980’s. Every decade is separated into its own category and the book cover images are a respectable viewing size (not some crap thumbnail like some other gallery sites).

Of all of the decades shown here, I think the 60’s had some of the best cover designs because they were simple, bold, and very graphic. The 70’s looks like they were transitioning into the more illustrative book covers that later took over the decade of the 80’s.

Take note also of the huge Pelican logo that was on the cover of the books in the 30’s and 40’s, and see how it shrinks over the course of the following decades. Frankly, I’m glad they shrunk the Pelican. The big bird was a bit distracting.

I guess if Doobybrain.com had a “moment of zen” feature, this would be it. The LIFE archives has a series of slightly peculiar photos of an unnamed elderly man ice skating in Peiping, China. The photographs were taken in February 1946 by Jack Wilkes.

Here’s a couple more of the same old man doing his thing:

Ok, I might as well just tell you to look at all of the related images in any of those links. It’s worth a good laugh.

Show Reel 2008

My friend Dave Hong has entered his show reels into the aniBoom Awards 2008 competition and it would be great if you could help him out and view some of his amazing animation work. The work uploaded to the competition consists mostly of fantastic short animations that lead-in to a full show.

I’ve known Dave for a while now but I’ve never really seen any of his work until now, and I am really impressed. It’s all top-notch quality and certainly deserving of some recognition.

I know your lives aren’t as busy as you think, so take some time out and enjoy his videos and rate them after you’re done watching! I’m sure he’d thank you in person if he could!

BOSS virtual pedal board

by Doobybrain

BOSS has a virtual pedal board online that that’s separated into musical genres. Select any genre of music from the drop-down menu and BOSS recreates a distinct sound with a set of popular pedals. You can turn each one on or off but you cannot rearrange them or add other pedals from BOSS’s big collection.

Even with the limitations, the site is fun to play around with and hear what certain pedals can do to your guitar playing. I really like the Super Octave OC-3 pedal (shown above in brown). Sounds neat!

No Doubt to record and tour in 2009?

by Doobybrain

No Doubt have updated their website with an iChat-like conversation that hints towards a new tour for 2009. The band members take turns in this chat saying how much fun it would be to play music with each other again, and by the end of the chat conversation, all of them agree that it would be great if they came together to do such a thing.

They also hint towards writing new songs and recording again which would be totally awesome since they were originally supposed to release an album in 2008 (which they didn’t).

Carhartt Duck Active Jacket

Viv has convinced me that Carhartt stuff is actually worth buying. I’m going to copy her and get this Duck Active Jacket. It’s very cheap considering that it’s made of ultra-abrasive canvas material. GONNA RUB UP AGAINST SOMEBODY AND MAKE THEIR CLOTHES FALL APART!

Inside the Arnott’s Tim Tam factory

It’s Tim Tam madness on Doobybrain.com this week!

News.com.au (I miss typing that) has a 45-page gallery (meaning, 45 images, paginated…) of the Arnott’s Tim Tam factory and it is amazing to see just how these chocolate treats get created.

If you really can’t stand the pagination, you can install this updated Repagination extension for Firefox 3+ and view the entire series on one page. Trust me, 45 clicks is too many to go through.
