NYPD Museum Show 2008

I didn’t know this, but for the past 8 years, the NYPD has had something called the NYPD Museum Show (not to be confused with the official New York City Police Museum) that basically shows off their long line of antique and current NYPD vehicles. It’s a car show with only NYPD vehicles. This past summer, the 8th annual NYPD Musuem Show was held on June 21st and 22nd and it looks like it would have been a neat thing to visit if I was around at the time.

Greg Reynolds shot some photos for copcar dot com and his pictures certainly make me feel like I am traveling back in time to when these vehicles were actually on the streets.

I can’t seem to find information on when next year’s NYPD Museum Show is, but I really hope they have one and continue their tradition of driving these vehicles out into the streets. If you want to see more photos of old NYPD vehicles, you can visit Greg Reynolds’ list of car shows and search for ‘NYPD’. He’s covered the event for at least several years so there’s a good amount of photos to go through.

Here’s a video of some of the old cars heading towards the museum.

NYPD vehicles now have the rumbler siren

It’s official. I just heard an NYPD police vehicle equipped with the Rumbler siren speed down my street. I certainly felt the vibrations coming from the siren and I am very impressed! These will do well in cutting through all of the distracting NYC noise.

I posted previously about the Rumbler and how it uses low-frequency sounds to literally vibrate you (or the vehicle you are in) so that you are aware of the police siren even in loud areas.

Here’s another awesome example of the Rumbler siren in use on the West Side Highway.

No real reason to hit the malls on Black Friday

CBS talks to Tod Marks of Consumer Reports and he says that there’s really no reason to rush to the stores after Thanksgiving to get a great deal on electronics. He says that overall, sales have been ongoing for some time now to entice people to just buy anything because the US economy is in such crap.

He does say however that if you’re shopping for cheap clothes on Black Friday, it might be worth it to go to the stores because they have limited inventory due to the fact that retailers simply didn’t put in big orders because they know people aren’t necessarily shopping as much as they normally do this time around.

But for electronics, you might be better off waiting because prices are expected to drop even further after Black Friday.

In my opinion, your best bet is to skip the stores altogether and just shop online. Cheaper, faster, and you can do it in your underwear.

YouTube goes widescreen

If you’re watching a video on YouTube today, you’ll notice that the viewing area of the page has been expanded and the video player itself has switched to a widescreen format.

I felt like I had something more profound to say about the change, but I don’t. And now I’ve created this entry and I don’t want it to go to waste.

All-black BlackBerry Bold from ColorWare (and BGR)

2008 November 25

Boy Genius Report had ColorWare send them a customized all-black BlackBerry Bold unit just for kicks. And it looks beautiful.

I think if you order this from ColorWare, they take care of the entire process for your for a premium price. So if you aren’t keen on paying an arm and a leg for something you can do yourself, you can just go ahead and buy the black bezel and battery cover for $30 and then go home and do it yourself. You’ll save a whole lot and your phone will look more or less like the unit above (without the oddly placed BGR logo, of course).
