Wow, this might be the ultimate safety vest for cycling or walking around when it’s dark. Skateboard company, Manik, and Hugeblocks have teamed up to bring us the Black Refector (Nightrider), a jacket covered almost entirely in 3M reflective material. I love everything about this except for the insane $350 price point. What gives?!
In terms of general office supplies, I can think of none more boring than Scotch Tape and Post-It Notes. Both are necessities but both also come as incredibly mundane units and they’re definitely not something I would proudly display on my desk.
But maybe that’s about to change — at least in Canada — where 3M Canada is producing 2 items created by students at The Ontario College of Art & Design. The student projects were a joint collaboration with OCAD and 3M and the winning designs shown here were awarded with $3000 cash and production in 3M’s product line. If you’re in Canada, look for these items in 2010 (maybe they’ll bring them over State-side…who knows). [via]
Here’s a much better picture of that nuclear duct tape from 3M that’s been making the rounds on the internet. What’s not being made clear however is that the nuclear grade duct tape actually falls under the category of industrial tape from 3M and that there are actually two versions of Duct Tape 8979 (one with an ‘N’ and one without an ‘N’).
Both rolls of tape have their own specifications, but for most people, the standard 8979 roll should do more than enough. In fact, both rolls are certified to come off clean on opaque surfaces up to 6 months after application and both tapes are said to be able to withstand extreme heat and cold. If you want a rugged, weatherproof, and roll-back-proof tape, this is your best bet. As far as I’m concerned, this is just as useful and applicable as gaffer’s tape (although I’m partial toward gaffer’s tape).
About a month ago, I posted about Mike and his wonderful project of covering an entire bike in Scotchlite 680 reflective vinyl. At the time of that post, Mike was in the process of trying to get Beacon Graphics to make a smaller consumer version of the Bright Bike reflective kit (because an entire roll cost $100+).
Well, it looks like Mike and his efforts have paid off as he was able to get Beacon Graphics and Eyebeam together on a complete bicycle reflective kit that costs only $40. The Bright Bike DIY kit contains everything you need to turn your bike into a reflective mess! It includes 6 feet of 3M Scotchlite black reflective vinyl, a 4oz spray bottle of prep cleaner, and a felt squeegee.
If you get the kit, make sure you follow the instructions and watch this video to make sure you’re doing it right!
