Making a getaway from church

August 4, 2009 @ 10:49 am

This is the police dashcam video of a 7-year-old Utah boy who stole his father’s car because he didn’t want to go to church. That’s one way to get out of it, I guess. [via]

To each his own…

This praise band must have been a lot better than they seem in this video. Maybe. [via]

St. Henry’s Ecumenical Art Chapel

Man, take a look at this beautiful piece of architecture known as St. Henry’s Ecumenical Art Chapel located in Turku, Finland. It was designed by Matti Sanaksenaho and built in 2005 and it sits atop a hill in isolation from big cities and other man-made structures. The structure is made to look like an upturned boat with a “dark” entrance on its West side leading to a “bright” East side of the building (see photos).

This building looks like it should belong to the set of modern churches I posted about earlier. Simply amazing!

The Cavanagh’s and the communion wafer

wafers

Man, talk about a monopoly! The Cavanagh’s are responsible for supplying about 80% of the communion wafers that churches use in the United States (and very similar market shares in Australia, Canada, and Britain, too!).

The New York Times profiled the family business in a recent article and it’s fascinating to see a side of the church that hardly anyone ever really thinks about. Seriously, when do you look down at your communion wafer and think, “Gosh, I wonder who makes this?”.

What if church worship was like an NBC game?

This is the kind of quality I like seeing from the church when they parody something in the mainstream. Everything from the “triumphant music” in the beginning to the infographics at the bottom of the screen make this video worth sharing.

Thanks Joel!
