Concrete Table by STRALA

November 6, 2009 @ 9:29 pm

STRALA is the company behind the Bartok, a concrete table complete with bent iron rods for an authentic piece-of-rubble-in-your-dining-room look. [via]

I have no idea how much it costs, but I can pretty much bet that it costs way more than it looks.

A new bridge being built at the Hoover Dam

Check out this amazing photo of a new bridge being built across the Hoover Dam. The bridge will be named the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge and will serve primarily to relieve the traffic going around the Hoover Dam (which you can see in the picture above). The bridge will be an extension of US Route 93 and will be a new connection between Arizona and Nevada.

Right now, the bridge looks like a suspension bridge, but by implementing some new bridge-building techniques, it will actually be supported only by the concrete arches beneath (the suspension cables will be removed after construction is complete). Construction on the bridge began in 2005 and is said to be completed sometime in 2010. This should be a site to see the next time I visit the Hoover Dam. :)

It is finished

Some have been looking forward to this day for 4 years. Others, like me, have been looking forward to being done with school altogether since age 5. So finally, after 17 years of non-stop formal education, I am done! The only thing left now is the gallery opening (and closing) and graduation. Yippee!

Armour Homes demonstrated a new silo-house that can withstand the force of a car being dropped onto it. The demonstration was done in Greensburg, Kansas, a town that was devastated by tornadoes just two years earlier.

The houses being built by Armour Homes are said to be able to withstand winds as high as 200 miles per hour, essentially making them hurricane and tornado-proof.

House with a suspended pool

The Colin’s House in Spain is an architectural work of art with one neat feature: a suspended pool. The house sits on the side of a hill and the pool section of the home juts out from the side over the incline.

The image below shows a better picture of the concrete U that makes up the shape of the pool. More pictures here.

Bathtub separated by concrete wall

British architecture firm Dow Jones Architects has converted an old factory into a beautiful concrete, wood, and brick space. The image above is the bath area which is separated from the rest of the space it sits in by a simple concrete wall slab. I think it’s a great way to provide privacy while keeping the look of the rest of the house intact.

Check out more images of this space over at Arch Daily.
