This photo is awesome.

As far as I know, nobody was seriously injured in this crash (although some did go to the hospital for other reasons). See more of Jesse’s photos of the big crash here.

Video of Dodge Viper crashing into a van

October 31, 2009 @ 1:02 pm

Oh man, Simon just shared this crazy video of a Dodge Viper trying to weave through traffic, only to come out of a dark tunnel into the sunlight and crash into a van. Sucks to be you with all the money. [via]

Volvo developing a car that cannot crash

October 28, 2009 @ 12:14 am

Streetsblog posted this video of a disguised Volvo S60 prototype that the company is testing in Copenhagen that has a computer system which can essentially detect possible pedestrian collisions and prevent them from happening.

The system basically uses a series of sensors that detect objects around the car and if the car seems to be headed for a collision, the vehicle will either 1) slow down significantly if it is going over 25km/h; or 2) stop completely if it is already going under 25km/h.

Certainly an interesting idea and I really wonder how well this system would hold up in a city as crowded and fast-moving as NYC. Volvo hopes to have some sort of pedestrian detection system in their S60 vehicles by 2010 if all goes well in testing.

Rooftop view of Flight 175 hitting the South Tower

September 13, 2009 @ 11:36 am

I have never seen this particular footage of United Airlines flight 175 crashing into the South Tower. I’m sorry for those who don’t want to see these videos, but I feel like reviewing the events helps me cope in some odd way. Anyway, in this video, the person filming gets a clear glimpse of Flight 175 as it makes its way quickly into the NYC downtown area.

A plane just hit the second tower

September 12, 2009 @ 2:59 am

Taken from the DVD September 11, 2001 – As It Happened – A Composite, this compilation video shows various news outlets reporting live on the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks when the 2nd plane hit the South Tower at 9:03AM.

The second plane (Flight 175) crashing into the second World Trade Center tower was the first and very clear indication that what was happening that Tuesday morning was more than just an accident. Included in this video are footage from ABC News, CBS News, WNYW-TV (Channel 5, New York), WNBC-TV (Channel 4, New York), NY1 (New York One, All News), Fox News Channel, WCBS-TV (Channel 2, New York), and WPIX-TV (Channel 11, New York).

Reduce your odds of dying in a plane crash

David McCandless created this wonderful infographic showing how you can reduce your chances (statistically speaking) of dying in a plane crash by making a well-informed decision about who you fly with, where you fly to (and from), and what type of aircraft you’re flying in.

The graphic above won The Guardian’s Data Store competition.
