Prologue designed the motion graphics for MTV Video Music Awards 2009

October 3, 2009 @ 2:01 am

I remember watching the MTV Video Music Awards this year and taking note of the beautiful transitional video pieces shown on screen. I had no idea who made them at the time, but I made a note on Twitter about how lovely they all seemed. It turns out that an LA-based graphics design company named Prologue are responsible for the look and they’ve been working with MTV on the Video Music Awards motion graphics for the past 3 years.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, head on over to Motionographer to watch all of Prologue’s VMA videos back to back. Is it weird that MTV asked an LA company to do NYC-related video promos?

Map of Manhattan made out of letters from advertising and commercial products

This is Michael Albert’s map of Manhattan made entirely out of letters taken from advertisements and commercial products. The whole collage was completed in Fall 2008 and it measures a whopping 32″x40″. By using these letters, Michael Albert spells out the locations of places and districts in Manhattan. The artist says that there is a spelling mistake in the map and challenges people to look for it.

Check out a PDF of the map here. I would love a huge print of this to hang on my wall. :)

Nikon D3 cut in half

Tokyobling visited the Tokyo Eco Products convention at the end of December last year and came across a cross-section of a Nikon D3 SLR camera. Everything seems to be there including battery cells, lens glass, the sensor, and what looks to be the mirror.

There’s no mess and no sharp edges which makes me think that a samurai was invited to the Nikon factory to do this job (after all, they are in Japan…right?). I mean, they didn’t build it like this, did they?

Modern deforestation in progress

January 25, 2009 @ 5:33 pm

When I think of deforestation, I picture the scenes from Fern Gully that show heavy machinery slowly making pulp out of trees, with conveyor belts and chop saws lined everywhere. It turns out that the process is a lot less cinematic but definitely still captivating when you witness it in action. [via]

The video above shows just how quickly deforestation can take place nowadays. With machinery that can cut a tree down, strip it of its bark, and chop it up into pieces in a matter of seconds, it’s no wonder that people are concerned about the rate at which we take advantage of our natural resources.
