Flying kills polar bears

This very graphic ad for PlaneStupid, an advocacy group against aviation expansion, was written and commissioned by Mother and produced by Rattling Stick. It shows polar bears falling out of the sky and meeting a very harsh death. Clearly, an illustration meant to stir up emotions enough to deter people from flying as often as they do. [via]

CityRoom is reporting on the death of a Continental Airlines pilot who died mid-flight while operating a Boeing 777 aircraft. The pilot, whose name has not be released, was 61 years old and apparently died of natural causes.

The plane was able to land safely with all 247 passengers at Newark International Airport after two first officers took control of the plane.

I wonder if the crew has to tell the passengers that their pilot died when something like this happens. Or does the crew just keep it amongst themselves to prevent panicked passengers?

Fully preserved woolly mammoth found in Siberia

A one-month old woolly mammoth has been unearthed in Siberia almost fully intact and preserved.

The pictures are quite fascinating especially given the fact that up until now, we really have not seen a true woolly mammoth preserved in such a good state. We’ve only been able to recreate a close representation of the prehistoric animal from bits and pieces of scientific discovery.

Scientists and researchers believe that the baby mammoth, named Lyuba, died from either a drowning or suffocation in thick mud and that one of these paths led to her body being preserved very well for about 40,000 years.
