Michigan Central Station

November 9, 2009 @ 2:56 am

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you’re probably sick and tired of me talking about Michigan Central Station. But the fact is that I’m still very fascinated by this place even after seeing just about every inch of this abandoned building in photographs. Kevin Bauman’s photos of the place are especially noteworthy and will give you a good sense of the abandoned nature of this place.

This past summer, I made a note about how Michigan Central Station will be demolished by the city sometime in the near future. As far as I know, the demolition hasn’t started yet and the building remains intact. If I can somehow figure out some free days in the near future, I would love to go to Detroit to see this before it gets torn down. I know, it’s been photographed a gazillion times over, but I’d like to see it and document it for myself.

The Infrastructurist has a photo gallery post of some abandoned subway stations around the world.

The one pictured above is the Rochester Subway, a long-abandoned system that still remains fairly intact today. I have plans to go to Rochester in the near future so I hope I get to see this in person one day.

Exploring the ruins of New York

Palladium Boots has unveiled a short video about exploring the urban ruins of New York City (and the surrounding boroughs). In the video, they hit up big spots like the Freedom Tunnel, the Glenwood Power Plant, and the Red Hook Grain Terminal. I’ve been to all 3 and I’ve shown photos here of the places before, but if you want a better view of them without actually having to go there, then you’ll want to watch the video because it’s sorta interesting.

Washington, D.C. photographer Stephen Voss was in Detroit earlier this year and captured some disturbing images of abandoned school buildings in the ailing city. Lots of discarded books, peeling paint, and overall destruction in the photos. Fascinating but sad at the same time.

Abandoned Rochester Subway poster

Rochester Subway is having a pretty great deal TODAY ONLY on a 24×36 inch poster of the unused Rochester Subway. The poster originally costs $20, but it will automatically be discounted to $15  when you add it to your shopping cart. But act fast, because once today is over, the deal is over too and the price goes back up to $20.

The poster above includes a history and story of the Rochester Subway and also shows proposed extensions to the transportation system before it fell into disrepair.

Oh and they’ve also got a gallery up of photos of the abandoned subway system.

James and Karla Murray have a new website up

October 17, 2008 @ 10:59 am

James and Karla Murray, one of my great sources of photographic inspiration and exploration, have updated their website and are showcasing a wealth of images that they’ve shot over the years.

The bunny rabbit one below is kinda funny and peculiar. I’m really wondering why they did that…
