Powersliding: an extreme sport that doesn’t deserve the name

April 9, 2009 @ 9:20 pm

When I first saw this powersliding video, I honestly thought it was a joke. I mean, nobody would actually bother to practice this as a sport, right? WRONG.

It turns out that powersliding is a very real sport and it’s currently coming up on its 3rd annual powersliding championships. If sliding around on slick surfaces in jeans can be a sport, then let’s put it right up there next to extreme ironing.

2009 Official AFL commercial

March 26, 2009 @ 5:07 pm

This 2009 official AFL commercial is epic. When I went to my first footy game, I remember thinking “Man, these guys are going at it pretty roughly and they don’t even wear protective gear”. Subsequently, that made me think pretty highly of these athletes especially when compared to their American counterparts.

In this ad, AFL players are put up against some of the roughest sports players in other sports leagues and they still manage to stand out. Awesome.

How Gore-Tex fabrics are tested

February 27, 2009 @ 7:43 pm

Discovery News sent two correspondents to the Gore laboratories to see how Gore-Tex fabrics are tested with some very advanced weather-simulation machines. The weather chambers at Gore can practically simulate any real-world weather condition from extreme heat to extreme cold.

The purpose of the visit was to better understand how Gore keeps people comfortable in extreme weather, that way the two Discovery News correspondents will be prepared to handle Alaska’s climate when they head there next week to film.

Their labs remind me a lot of the Good Housekeeping testing center at the Hearst Tower in New York City.
