Media Temple downtime

Late yesterday afternoon, Media Temple experienced a massive server failure like the one that happened in early March. I don’t see how a hosting company like theirs can afford to let the same problem occur twice in a span of 2 months. I’m angry to say the least that this site was down for 12+ hours, but I believe they have bigger problems boiling as seen by the many tweets posted throughout the night on Twitter.

Do you know what a White Elephant is?

September 29, 2008 @ 10:59 am

A white elephant is a term used to describe an object of value that cannot be disposed of, sold, or traded by its owner and whose cost of ownership greatly exceeds its usefulness.

The expression comes from Southeast Asia where owning and keeping a white elephant is considered sacred. To this very day, owning a white elephant in certain Asian communities is considered both a blessing and a curse. If you have one, you must keep it and maintain it and you cannot put it to work, thus creating a burden on the owner to offset the cost of ownership.

Throughout history, “White Elephant” has gone on to describe big projects that cost a lot of money and whose purpose and use is far less than expected or abandoned altogether. Wikipedia has a list of white elephants to look at it.

Washington Mutual becomes the biggest bank failure in history

September 25, 2008 @ 11:31 pm

I don’t quite understand the whole economy right now, but all of this talk of banks failing sounds incredibly scary. The New York Times is reporting that Washington Mutual was just seized by the United States Government and sold to JP Morgan Chase. At the time of the sale, Washington Mutual’s total assets were worth an estimated $307 billion (which is to say, WaMu is a $307 billion failure).

Should I be doing anything?
