When I was younger, I had a spinning globe on a stand that I used to place on my desk. I hardly ever used it, but I kept it there because I liked how it looked on my desk (plus, it lit up). I haven’t owned a globe since then but this Orion Black Ocean illuminated world globe is sorta making me want one again. At $85, it’s no cheap desk accessory (that’s the sale price, too!), but at least that sort of money will get you a globe that will be unlike most of your friend’s globes (if they even have any). And hey, the black oceans are a nice contrast to the usual blue oceans on traditional globes.
Oh, and flip the switch and you’ll see the continents and words on the globe light up in a very nice, high-contrast look.
Globe, a subsidiary of Specialized Bicycles, has unveiled the Roll 2 bicycle, an all-white bike that evokes the feel of a ghost-bike. I don’t know if people at Globe are just oblivious to ghost bikes, but it seems a bit insensitive to create an all-white bicycle even if it does look nice. I mean, add some sort of color somewhere to differentiate it or something.
UPDATE: Brad from UrbanVelo says that the bike is a very light blue. Upon closer inspection, I can confirm that the bike is indeed a light blue, however, it still evokes a sense of a ghost-bike because of the similar look.
As I was watching this video, I couldn’t help but think about how easy it is for somebody working at a globe factory to lose an extremity or a limb. There are so many press machines in the process of creating a globe that it just looks like one split-second mistake could cost somebody a lot of pain. [via]
Then again, I’m sure that these people are very skilled at what they do (I mean, they must be since I reckon the pieces must fit together very precisely). Anyway, check out the video because I think it’ll give you a new appreciation for the globe.
By the way, does anybody still use a globe nowadays? I can’t remember the last time I used one.
