I now have a legitimate reason to start actively using my Google Voice number because as of earlier today, Google has allowed for the free forwarding of SMS messages to your Gmail account. You can reply via email too which is utterly fantastic!!! There really is no need for me to keep my text message plan for much longer.

I don’t know how anybody can find this gaming interface/theme pleasing to use. Yuck. Google made this one to please the nerds.

Yesterday afternoon, I got invited to join Google Voice (formerly Grand Central), Google’s “Gmail for your phone”. Google Voice does many things including giving you a lifetime phone number that you’ll never ever ever have to change again, transcribing voicemails, allowing you to call any number for free within the US, call international numbers for very cheap, send SMS messages for free, and offer a user interface similar to Gmail that shows voicemails and SMS in conversations/threads.
The permanent phone number and forwarding options are pretty neat especially if you have multiple phones in the vicinity that you’d like to pick up a call from. Also, the screening features are superb (I sorta don’t have to worry about unknown numbers anymore or spam callers).
I’m obviously still getting a handle on it all, but I’m pretty fascinated by the new service. I could easily see this being a big deal in the near future.

Yep, that’s the full list of experimental features available as of April 2009 in Gmail Labs. The list is getting long, with Google confirming 43 different features to choose from and no clear way to sort them or view them. Something needs to be done about this…

Gmail’s new Undo Send feature (in Gmail Labs) should hopefully solve the email problem of forgetting to include an attachment, thus reducing the amount of duplicate emails from senders. YES.

Gmail Labs just added the ability to access multiple inboxes on one screen with the “Multiple Inboxes” feature. Essentially, what this does is add dedicated search panes right alongside your regular inbox. This is great news for those of us who are power Gmail users and rely on its fantastic search capabilities to sort and organize our emails.
To get multiple inboxes in your Gmail, click the Labs icon at the top right of your inbox and then enable “Multiple Inboxes”. Once enabled, you will see a new tab under your Settings that allows you to set parameters for each inbox. Modifying each inbox is as easy as copy and pasting a search or sort query into the blank space provided. You can have up to 5 additional inboxes (best for those who have larger resolutions, obviously) and you can have them display either to the right, below, or above the main inbox.
This is by far the best Labs feature to be added to Gmail and those of us who choose to take advantage of this feature will surely see their daily productivity shoot through the roof. I feel like this is one of those features to change the web email landscape in much the same way Gmail did when they first appeared on the scene.
