General Motors filing for bankruptcy on Monday

BIG NEWS: General Motors (GM), one of America’s “Big Three” automakers, is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New York in hopes that within 6-18 months, the company will be able to stand on its own. After filing for bankruptcy, the United States Government will own approximately 60% of GM stock.

Here’s a beautiful infographic covering the history of United States government corporate bailouts since 1970. The graphic shows the total amount in USD, the company that received the funds, and the outcome of the bailout in the bigger picture of things.

Damn, that Citigroup bailout makes all of the other large amounts seem puny.

The United States Geological Survey, the scientific agency within the United States government that studies the landscape of the U.S. and its natural resources, has a photo library online of their image collection. The photos date back to a time when the U.S. was drastically different than it is now as people then ventured into unknown territory and settled there. Some of the photos date back to the late 1800’s (about the time the USGS was formed).

History of United States government bailouts

You’re probably asking what those colorful bubbles are above. Well, they represent the size of United States government bailouts in history beginning in 1970. That big burgundy dot at the far right? Yeah, that’s the $700 billion bailout that recently failed to get passed. [via]

Check out the infographic and list of US government bailouts at ProPublica and see how the US government has helped certain American industries from collapse. ProPublica also takes a look at how the US Treasury handled itself after said bailouts. In almost all cases, the US government lost money after the companies bounced back from the bailout.

In a related note, check out the FDIC’s official list of closed banks in the US. Look at all of those dates in 2008.

The New School is handing out these small booklets with the US Constitution in them. It’s a quick read and it’s full of invaluable information inside (the facts really are fascinating — seriously). If you see one around your campus, definitely pick one up.
