Getting into Time Machine

Data loss has happened to me twice in the past year and I’m not about to let it happen again. I’m a bit late to the game, but I’m finally taking some steps to make sure I have my data backed up by redundant drives. My teachers would kill me if they knew I was just getting into this now especially since it’s literally been drilled in my head to back up my stuff since the first day of classes.

In any case, I am finally doing it and it’s already giving me some sense of comfort in case anything ever should happen to my main drive (let’s hope not). For the first time ever, I’m making use of Leopard’s built-in Time Machine application and so far it seems to be running smoothly. Although, there’s no way I’ll know for sure until something terrible happens. But from what I hear, it’s as good a backup program as any other one out there. Also, Apple’s demo looks very intriguing.

So here’s hoping that it works as advertised.

Netgear SC101

Norman suggested that I buy a Netgear SC101 storage capsule for my two IDE hard-drives sitting on my desk. And since Just Deals had it on sale for $20, I decided to go for it and bypass the MSRP of $90.

When it comes in, I’ll essentially have a dedicated backup and storage solution similar to that of Apple’s Time Capsule at only a fraction of the cost. I’m not sure how the software works, but I hope it’s easy to set up. I’ll let you know when it comes in.

“Mac-compatible” My Passport

I don’t fully understand why hard drive companies like Western Digital make Mac-specific products when all of their products can be used on a Mac. In any case, it’s a good excuse for them to put out the same product with a slightly different look, and in this case, the newly announced Mac-compatible My Passport external hard drive is no exception. The subtle but distinctive silver-lining along the side of this My Passport hard drive really makes it look better than its plain black counterpart. But honestly, this is the same thing. Same thing. Exact same thing. SAME THING. NO DIFFERENCE. SAME THING.

LaCie Hard Disk MAX holds 2TB

In a couple of years, I’m sure I’ll look back at this post and think “Heh, I was all hyped up about storing a mere 2TB of data!”, but until then, I guess the LaCie Hard Disk MAX is a pretty decent deal at $270.

But geez, can this thing be any bigger? :(

Western Digital My Passport Essential portable HDD

The sexy Passport hard-drives from Western Digital have just gotten a bit sexier with these new My Passport Essential USB-powered shiny black boxes. Like the regular WD Passports, the My Passport Essential is thin, fast, and looks superb. You honestly can’t store your stuff in anything better.

As you can see, the My Passport Essential is small enough to fit in your shirt pocket (not a recommended storing location).

The My Passport Essential comes in storage capacities of 160GB, 250GB, and 300GB. The 300GB is only $200. Mod this sucka with a LCD screen and a headphone jack and you’ve just bought yourself the world’s cheapest iPod with the greatest storage capacity. Heh, just kidding (although I’d like to see somebody do that).
