Sony MDR-XB500 headphones

November 20, 2009 @ 1:26 am

I’m not an audiophile but I do like the cans over my ears to be rather decent and while I don’t expect these Sony MDR-XB500 headphones to be better than my Koss PortaPro headphones (they’re pretty hard to beat), they do look cool enough for me to want to give them a try.

I just wonder if the $50 pricetag is worth the sound quality coming out of these “extra bass” Sony MDR-XB500 headphones.

Koss PortaPro headphones

Simon has a pair of these Koss PortaPro Headphones and I was so impressed with the quality and clarity of their sound that I went ahead and bought myself a pair as well. I understand that these aren’t the look that everybody is going for, but I discarded the fact that they don’t look all too “modern” after I heard the sound that comes out of them. In a word, the sound is wonderful!

Plus, it doesn’t hurt that they’re only $32 on Amazon.com.
Not a bad investment at all, even if you never do wear them outside. Koss PortaPro Headphones.

AIAIAI Pipe Earphones

I saw these Pipe Earphones by AIAIAI over at Acquire and thought they looked pretty outstanding and simple.

They go for about $50-$60 in black, yellow, green, purple, and gold (plus an option for the headset version for iPhone devices). That gold one kind of looks nice, but I’d have to see it in person to make a final decision as gold stuff almost always looks deceivingly good in photos.

Today’s Woot description is awesome

woot-refurbished-ipod

Today’s Woot deal is a refurbished 5G iPod video for $104. That’s a good deal actually, but even if you aren’t in the market for one, you should head on over to Woot to read their product description.

In case your monitor can’t display pictures, or you’re black-white colorblind, or you’ve never seen an iPod before, let’s make this clear: this iPod comes with white earbuds and white earbuds only.

We say this to pre-empt another ugly situation like the one we had with Millard, the customer who demanded satisfaction after we had the temerity to send white earbuds with his black iPod.

Not mollified by the fact that Apple only makes white earbuds, Millard grumbled that now his daughter would lack a properly color-coordinated personal media solution. So he went out and paid $29 for black earbuds somewhere else and laid the blame at our feet. Despite our humongous photo of said iPod with white earbuds, despite everybody on Earth except Millard knowing that Apple’s white earbuds are iconic and ubiquitous, Millard still insisted that we “do something to off-set my additional expense” because he “felt mislead.” We’re a funny species, aren’t we?

So for all you Millards out there, even if you choose the “Black” option for today’s Apple iPod 30GB Video, be advised that it will NOT include black earbuds. It will give you 30GB of storage space for music and video, a 2.5” 320×240 QVGA screen, and a built-in rechargeable battery good for 14 hours of music or 2 hours of video on a charge. And it’ll come in the characteristically stylish and hand-pleasing Apple hardware that has taken the world by storm. If you really, really need to play your Black iPod through something black, we know where you can find a cheap iPod boombox/docking speakmajig that will satisfy your peculiar chromatic fixation.

But black earbuds? Sorry, Millard. Not the way this whole iPod thing works. Before you spend thirty bucks to correct our “mistake”, here’s a tip: it’d be a lot cheaper to buy a can of spray paint. Sure, you won’t be able to listen to the earbuds after you paint them. But they’ll be the right color. And that’s really the important thing. Apparently.

Those Woot guys are good writers!

Those $1.99 Apple headphones came in

apple-headphones-packaged

Remember those Apple headphones I posted that were selling for only $1.99? Well, they came in today and they’re fully legit. They are the exact same headphones/earphones that come with iPod devices and they even come packaged in the exact same silvery-reflective wrapping.

I was skeptical of them at first because I couldn’t believe a company would be selling headphones that normally cost about $30 for only a fraction of the price (of course, the $30 is for the headphones with the cable remote, but it’s similar anyway).

Anyway, Focal Price still has them up for $1.99 with free shipping so if you REALLY want them white Apple buds, then this is where to get them I guess. Still, I can’t help but feel a bit nervous every time I order electronic accessories from a company in China.

Apple iPod headphones for $1.99? Maybe.

apple-headphones-2nd-gen

So Focalprice.com has this deal on supposedly genuine Apple iPod headphones (the 2nd generation kind that feature a smoother slant) for only $1.99. That’s pretty cheap considering that Apple sells a similar headphone — with a remote — for $29.99.

But what’s weird is that Apple doesn’t actually sell these headphones at all. They only package them with iPod music players and iPod touch devices. So I’m wondering how this site got their hands on so many of these to sell…

Anyway, $1.99 was too cheap to pass up if they were real headphones and too cheap to care if this turned out to be a sour deal. So what I did was I bought them anyway. I’ll update in a week or so to let you know what the result was. In the meantime, if you feel like testing this deal out too, you can do so and rest assured that at least Buxr.com thinks this is somewhat legit enough to post about.
