Honda’s latest commercial for the Insight Hybrid car is pretty amazing. The folks at Wieden + Kennedy, Amsterdam parked a grid of Insights in the desert and used the vehicle headlights to make up a collective LCD screen.
The NYPD is unleashing a fleet of 40 brand-new Nissan Altima hybrid vehicles in the next two weeks to be used as official NYPD patrol cars. The Nissan Altima hybrids have the capability to go up to 40mph before a single drop of gas is used. And compared to the measly 16mpg of the current fleet of Ford Crown Victoria’s, the Nissan Altima hybrids will be able to go up to 32mpg in the city, a fairly significant jump in fuel savings which will ultimately help the city save a few dollars.
Of course, the hybrid vehicles won’t go nearly as fast (113mph top speed compared to 165mph top speed of Dodge Charger), but then again, when are NYPD vehicles ever going anywhere near top speed anyway? I think 113mph is pretty fast already and with NYC streets as narrow as they are, I doubt any criminal being chased is going to top that without something terrible happening.
To start, the NYPD has outfitted 18 hybrids as marked patrol cars, bringing the $21,500 base cost to $30,752 per car. Another 20 are unmarked ($25,595 each), and two are disguised as yellow cabs for anticrime work ($28,600 each).
All together, the city has reportedly spent $1.1 million on the new cars and hope it will curb pollution.
So my dad and I are looking at new cars and one of the ones we’re both pretty fixated on is the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. It’s a rather ordinary looking car but underneath it’s a bit more than extraordinary. It offers quite substantial mileage per gallon over the other cars in its class and it has a wonderfully design dashboard that really extends the center console unit to a great degree. And according to Ford, if you’re driving below 47mph, the car is almost 100% electric. So in most city-driving situations, you won’t be using any gas at all!
I really wouldn’t mind driving this car. It’s spacious, not too ugly, decently priced, and it has an awesome webpage. Sadly, I doubt we’ll get this car because it’s only available in automatic. :(
