Antrepo has just released a 3rd icon set of container boxes that really blows away just about all other icon sets I’ve ever seen. The icon set is available as a free download for both Mac and PC operating systems.
If you recall, Antrepo is the same folks that brought you that other impressive container icon pack.

Throwboy has a fun little pillow set modeled after some of the default apps that come with Mac OS X. At the moment, the icon pillow set includes Finder, iTunes, Photo Booth, iChat, Dashboard, and iPhoto and can be purchased for $149. If you prefer just one, you can choose for $29 each. The pillows are hand crafted and made with 100% fleece and filled with polyester fibers.
Check out Throwboy’s Flickr for some images of the items and how they’re made.

Jon Hicks gave a talk a while back at Geek In The Park about icon design and he has just recently made his talk available in a variety of formats including slideshow PDF, audio recording, and HTML transcript. In addition, Jon has also included all of the links from the PDF (and his talk) in a convenient delicious account so that you can go through them and explore the research on icon design on your own time.
His PDF slideshow is particularly interesting because it talks visually shows how icons have been interpreted in real-life, the web, and on your PC desktop. There are some good lessons to take away from his presentation even if you aren’t personally invested in icon-creation. It’s just interesting for me to read in words what’s always sort of been a no-brainer in terms of keeping iconography consistent, informational, and enjoyable to look at.
So head on over to his website now to get your dose of design inspiration from the man who created the Firefox and Thunderbird icons.

For those of you using Macs, have you ever taken a good look at the Preview icon?
What I mean is, enlarging the icon to its maximum allowable size before distortion. Generally speaking, I only see the Preview icon in dock-size when the application is open for previewing, but now that I’ve seen the Preview icon up close, I have to say that that boy really creeps me out for some reason.
I wish Apple had used a more generic image (an illustration or a silhouette or something).
Note to self: Go to sleep earlier, because when you stay up real late (it’s now 4:50AM), you start doing weird things on your computer.
