The City of Melbourne announced a brand-new city-wide identity today that is helping to position the city as one of the world’s most visually stimulating and modern places to live. The new logo does away with the previous logo that was designed in the 90’s and updates it with a multi-faceted large M. The new logo certainly makes me think of places like Federation Square.
Marks is Pentagram’s latest book that showcases 400 symbols, logos, and identities that the firm has designed (or re-designed) between 1962 and today. The 400 symbols are laid out on 800 pages of French-folded bible paper and bound in a red cloth-covered softback cover.
The book is being printed in only a limited quantity of 1000, so if you want it, you better reserve a copy now at Amazon.com (Pentagram Marks: 400 Symbols & Logotypes – $40.95).
Also, I think the logo at the far right on the top row is wrong for the company that it represents. I mean, I still got that one right, but it was really a wild guess. Anybody else think the same about that one?
The Duane Reade on 8th Avenue and 34th Street in New York City is sporting a new logo that look kind of silly on the side of the building. I’m not saying that the old logo is any better than the new one, but I don’t think the new black and white logo is a good look for the drug store chain. And according to City Room, it looks like the new Duane Reade logo is the new logo to hate on.
I haven’t seen any Duane Reade shopping bags with the new logo on it yet, but I’m really interested in seeing how this new logo will look on the bags. I think that’s the real test of brand identity for this drug store.
