Google Dashboard lets you see what Google knows about you

November 5, 2009 @ 7:49 pm

Google launched a new feature (not really a feature, actually) today called Dashboard that lets you easily see all of the information that Google stores about you in one place. The site is an easy way to get to each Google product’s settings/privacy pages without having to log in to each service.

If you use Google products and services on a day to day basis, I recommend that you go to your Google Dashboard and see if you’ve got any settings you might want to change.

I saw Mactracker over at TUAW and was intrigued by its purpose. Mactracker is a freeware app that is basically a library of Apple computer products from the very beginning to the most recent. It can provide very detailed information on any computer and note any changes from version to version. It even provides information like how much it was on sale for at the time of its release.

For the information junky in me, this application is GOLD.

WWIII propaganda posters

WWIII-google-earth

World War 3 isn’t currently under way (at least not officially), but if it were to happen I believe these fake WWIII propaganda posters speak the truth about the power behind the spread of information in the virtual world. The continual access to relevant and correct information is no doubt going to make a big difference in driving support — or disgust — against a particular side in a conflict. Check out the rest of the Flickr photoset to see some posters about the power behind Twitter.

Oversharers: a showcase of people who share too much information

June 3, 2009 @ 10:43 pm

oversharers

Oversharers is a new website that collects Facebook status updates, tweets, and blog posts from people online who seem to share way too much information about their private lives. Nice, maybe Oversharers and Tweeting Too Hard will have some effect on the type of things people upload to the internet. Maybe.

How The Internet Archive stores its data

March 26, 2009 @ 5:23 pm

internet-archive-story

Anybody who has used The Internet Archive knows that there’s a wealth of information and data stored there that is seemingly unfathomable to the average person. Essentially, it acts as a sort of Time Machine for the web allowing you to view just about any page on the internet beginning around 1996 until now. And even with a few pages missing here and there, the infrastructure needed to hold The Internet Archive together must be pretty impressive.

To show off their robust technologies, Sun Microsystems put together an interactive tour of how they manage to get The Internet Archive up and running smoothly and consistently. By using Sun’s server technology in their Modular Datacenters packed into shipping containers, The Internet Archive is able to continually udpate its database of the web while making sure the past is preserved without any failure or downtime.

A couple of interesting facts:

  • The Internet Archive grows at a rate of about 100TB every month.
  • The Internet Archive currently fits into one 20-foot shipping container, but additional containers can be added on the fly.
  • The Internet Archive database is currently about 3 petabytes in size.
  • The Internet Archive is one of the largest (if not the largest) digital archive in the world.

It’s a bunch of nerdy stuff I guess, but you have to admire how crazy and awesome these people must be to want to archive ALL digital data on the internet.
