Mute Math at Nokia Theater

November 14, 2009 @ 2:10 pm

I went to see Mute Math (with As Tall As Lions opening) at the Nokia Theater last night and as always they gave a great show. Since this was the last night of their Armistice album tour, they played a lot of songs from their new album but also mixed in a lot of older songs.

I was super excited when they started playing “Peculiar People” because that was the song that made me love them when I heard them play it a few years back at a show at Irving Plaza (where THEY were the opening act and nobody knew who they were). Overall, this show was spectacular and I still hold to the belief that if you haven’t seen Mute Math live, then you haven’t truly seen a great live show.

Maroon 5 at St. John’s University

November 9, 2009 @ 1:47 am

I went to see Maroon 5 (along with Fitz and the Tantrums) at St. John’s University on Saturday and they both put on a good show. The lead singer of Fitz and the Tantrums dances really awkward but that made it really fun to watch him and his band perform.

During the intermission between Fitz and the Tantrums and Maroon 5, Adam Levine brought out a special unannounced guest to the stage which really brought the house down. The special guest turned out to be Jason Segel (you might know him from How I Met Your Mother, I Love You Man, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up etc.) and Jason ended up playing the piano and singing a couple of songs from his recent movies (he’s actually a very talented musician and a hilarious song writer).

And then of course, after Jason left the stage, Maroon 5 took the realms and played a fantastic set with Adrian Young (the drummer of No Doubt) who was filling in for Maroon 5’s usual drummer due to a family emergency. I noticed Adrian right away and it made me so damn happy to be at the show (he’s a really great drummer if you don’t know).

Check out some images below that I took at the show.

Stephen Wiltshire is drawing the entire NYC skyline from memory

October 29, 2009 @ 12:10 am

Diagnosed with autism at an early age, artist Stephen Wiltshire has been at the Pratt Institute since Monday drawing the entire New York City skyline — all 305 square miles of it — by memory. Stephen has the ability to remember things with incredibly detail and he can recall things like the number of columns on a building or the number of windows on a building (multiply this by several hundred buildings and you get a sense of how awesome Stephen is). Wiltshire, who has been featured in a number of TV documentaries about people with incredible talents because of their autism, has already drawn several other cities by memory.

To get a view of NYC, Wiltshire flew over the city in a helicopter just once and then started drawing at a public gallery space at Pratt on Monday. He hopes to finish the entire panoramic drawing by this Friday. If you want to keep up with Stephen’s progress, CBS News has a live feed of his public studio gallery where he is working from. See the live feed below.

Mat Kearney at Irving Plaza in NYC

September 29, 2009 @ 11:45 pm

Just came back from an amazing concert with Mat Kearney and Diane Birch at Irving Plaza. Solid playing all around and a beautiful stage and light setup on the part of Mat Kearney’s crew.

During the concert, Mat jumped down from the stage and literally hung out for a minute or two with the crowd. He was hugging everyone and just having a good time with the people there. In addition, it was my first time ever seeing NY-native Diane Birch in concert and she certainly blew me away with her voice — soulful and elegant is how I would describe her singing style.

Check out some images of the concert below. I would definitely recommend checking out both Mat Kearney and Diane Birch if you don’t already know their tunes.
