OASISNYC just linked me to a great Google Maps mashup on WNYC that shows construction projects in NYC. The map labels areas as partially under construction, completed, and partially occupied — all great information if you want to get a peek at some of NYC’s urban holes and building shells.
I went and saw the Mannahatta Project at The Museum of the City of New York a while back and it was quite possibly one of the most boring museum exhibits I’ve ever been to. It effectively made me not want to buy the book despite my huge interest in New York City’s history.
What I did not catch at the museum exhibit was this neat Google Maps mashup of the Mannahatta Project and the renders of what Manhattan used to look like. You can literally click on any street in Manhattan and view it’s history and see what it looked like back in 1609.
It’s a combination of several 2channel / Nicovideo memes. The ones I recognize:
Overall, the thing is a parody of (a parody of, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8FfUqZSWJw) the racing scenes from the racing anime Initial D, which all look kind of like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv020dZXOrY. There is also a “Gutter run” in there, which is kind of the main characters signature move, where he hooks his wheels into the gutter to be able to go around the curve faster.
The dudes on the bike are from a gay wrestling porn movie. It’s popular on nicovideo and has sparked things like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9PFoBNuNMw (NSFW, duh.)
The person driving the Steamroller is Kagamine Rin, a Vocaloid personification. She and Len are somehow associated with steamrollers now, presumably because both are yellow.
The background music is also a pretty distorted Vocaloid song, see that first youtube link up there.
And with that, I hope this doesn’t ruin the rest of your weekend… [via]
Just wanted to say that Terry Urban’s musical mashup of Santigold’s music is very fun to listen to. Apparently Santigold’s record label sent a cease and desist to Terry when the Southerngold mixtape went live but it was too late — the tracks had already hit the internet and were spreading for good reason. Now, it’s been confirmed that Santigold herself likes the mixtape and wants people to hear it, so PMA put the album up for download. Not bad, not bad. I like it!
