So I just finished watching the Michael Jackson memorial via CNN.com, Hulu, and SkyNews and I have to say that SkyNews takes the cake for best presentation and video quality. They had the entire stream in HD which was pretty fantastic. You could literally see the tears in people’s eyes.
Later today (July 7, 2009), Hulu will be streaming the entire Michael Jackson Memorial live on their website. The stream will begin at 12:55PM EST and be broadcast live from the Staples Center.
1010wins is reporting that new developments in the rebuilding of the former World Trade Center at Ground Zero put the project at a full completion date of about 2030 (plus or minus a few years). The developer, Larry Silverstein, apparently only has enough money in the bank to insure 2 of the towers.
The Freedom Tower and Silverstein’s three planned towers — designed by architects like Lord Norman Foster and Richard Rogers — are all expected to be among the city’s tallest towers.
But an analysis prepared for the Port Authority by the Cushman & Wakefield real estate brokerage projected that while two of Silverstein’s towers could be built by 2013, a third wouldn’t be built until 2030 and fully leased until 2036. A second tower that hasn’t been built yet wouldn’t be fully leased until 2025, the analysis said.
This is a major blow to the painful and slow rebuilding process that has taken place downtown since 9/11. And with the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 coming up very soon, it looks like nothing — not even the WTC Memorial — will be completed.
This afternoon I went to the Joe Ades tribute and memorial down at Union Square. The gathering started promptly at 1pm and went on for about half an hour as people stood and recounted their memories of the interesting Union Square character. A bunch of locally famous people were there, including a man named Barry who supposedly founded the Green Market at Union Square. Ades’ children were also there to thank people for their love and support.
Reverend Billy was there to conduct the ceremonies, offering his own booming voice in tribute to Mr. Ades. Others brought their own vegetable peelers to the tribute and peeled carrots as people spoke into a mic about their encounters with Joseph Ades. The crowd was a modest size and I’m sure Ades would have made some smart remark about people gathering to remember him. It seems like something he’d do.
Here are some of the photos I took from the event. RIP Mr. Ades!
There’s going to be a tribute and memorial to the late Joseph “Joe” Ades in Union Square this Saturday at 1PM on the south steps near the statue. The organizer is asking everybody to take some time out of their day to remember the man who, at one time or another, had us mesmerized by his charisma and humor while selling vegetable peelers on the streets of New York City.
Invite anybody you want and bring a vegetable peeler if you’ve got one!
I think this is pretty neat and it’ll be wonderful to be able to see such a grand miniature of the former WTC towers. But God only knows when the city will complete the museum and memorial. What is it now…nearly 8 years since the 9/11 attacks and downtown is still a big hole? That’s ridiculous…
