The Walt Disney Company is celebrating the 80th birthday of their mascot Mickey Mouse today. According to official Disney records, Mickey Mouse appeared in the company’s first sound-synchronized animated short, “Steamboat Willie“, on November 18, 1928. Since then, the company has used the date as the birth date for Mickey Mouse.

As you might have already known, Mickey Mouse is the evolved form of an earlier cartoon character by Walt Disney named Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

I’ve included “Steamboat Willie” below for you all to enjoy and celebrate to. Whee!

October 24, 2008 @ 2:41 pm

Dave Bondi has created this amusing mashup of Mickey Mouse and Mario, two of the world’s most recognizable mascots, and named it Akashi. It is both weird and awesome at the same time, and for $65, that’s not a bad price for a very unique collectible. Check out more photos at TOMOPOP. [via]

I kinda want one. By the way, this thing is 9 inches tall. NINE INCHES TALL. That means that this thing is big enough for people across the office to see it and give you WTF looks.
