DO IT HOW WE DO IT: an end of summer mixtape from Doobybrain.com

School is starting back up for many students and for the first time in about 18 years I am not going back to classes. It’s a bit weird not having to worry about grades, buying school supplies, and showing up for classes…although in due time I’ll have to worry about showing up for work on time instead.

Anyway, as I watched some of the students move in to FIT across the street yesterday, I realized that summer for me was also ending despite not really having anywhere to be. So what better way to sum up the summer than to create a mix of songs that stuck with me through the last several months, right?

A lot of the songs here familiar singles and for good reason — they’re great songs! Like all of the mixes I make, I intended this one to be played in the car while driving, but you’re free to download it and listen to it on your iPod while walking around campus (or to work) or while you’re sitting at your desk. It’s an overall upbeat mix so don’t expect to put this one on while you’re trying to sleep.

Ministry of Sound – Sessions Six

When I get an album, I always try my hardest to like the majority of the tracks so that I can convince myself to keep the entire album in context. I have this sort of anal part of me that hates it when a song is stripped of the songs surrounding it and I think that’s why I prefer to keep full albums — even if I don’t like every track — rather than singles.

Sometimes however, this is nearly impossible. For instance, this Ministry of Sound Sessions Six compilation comes as a 3-disc set, the first (mixed by Goodwill) and third (mixed by Dirty South) of which aren’t very good. The second disc however (mixed by Tommy Trash) is a danceable gem. I like putting it on and thinking that I’m in one of the clubs in St. Kilda. Just kidding. Sorta.

LRG Presents Wale & 9th Wonder – Back To The Feature mixtape

Nick Catchdubs recently released a new mixtape with Wale (released in conjunction with LRG) which I’ve been listening to since last week and I’m really liking it!

It’s like having an hour and 15 minutes of good beats flowing endlessly from track to track.

Santigold – Southerngold (Terry Urban mixtape)

June 16, 2009 @ 1:50 am

southerngold

Just wanted to say that Terry Urban’s musical mashup of Santigold’s music is very fun to listen to. Apparently Santigold’s record label sent a cease and desist to Terry when the Southerngold mixtape went live but it was too late — the tracks had already hit the internet and were spreading for good reason. Now, it’s been confirmed that Santigold herself likes the mixtape and wants people to hear it, so PMA put the album up for download. Not bad, not bad. I like it!

LVs and Autotune 2 (Kanye West mixtape)

Pigeons and Planes posted a link to this new Kanye West mixtape the other day and after a few days of listening, I think I can say that I like it a lot. It’s called LVs and Autotune 2, which I assume means that there was a similar mixtape that came before this one, but I haven’t heard the first one. In any case, I don’t think you really need to have heard the first mixtape to enjoy this one. There are a lot of recent Kanye collabs on it including “Poke Her Face” (with Lady Gaga, Common, and Kid Cudi), “Maybach Music 2″ (with Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and T-Pain), and “Knock You Down” (with Keri Hilson).

Of course, this being a Kanye West mixtape, the artists are sometimes flipped around to show Kanye West as the main artist, but if you can look past that, then this should be a delightful treat.
