Fire alarm jam session

What a clever way to keep beat! I wouldn’t consider this music to my ears, but the idea is pretty darn clever. [via]

Ceramic bird noise maker

February 3, 2009 @ 2:25 am

So on Sunday I was walking with Florence down in Chinatown trying to watch the Chinese New Year festivities (we couldn’t by the way) and we came across this woman on Mulberry Street selling these ceramic bird noise makers. You fill them up with a bit of water and you blow into them and they make a sound that is almost indistinguishable from a real bird!

It truly is a remarkably simple toy and one that I was more than happy to pay $2 for. If you want to get one, you can head on down to Mulberry Street between Canal and Bayard Streets and look for the woman selling these outside of a store from a small box. She should be demonstrating them so if you can’t see her, maybe you’ll hear the birds nearby. Seriously, pick one up. We’ll make bird melodies together.

UPDATE: Sorry about the video being private at first. It’s public now so all of you can watch it freely.

This is what a koala sounds like while mating

Those Australians are so crazy…

I love how this AP news video included the mating call once again right at the very end. In case you missed it.

Sound From Wind: turn your bike into a musical instrument

November 19, 2008 @ 1:21 pm

Coming in at 3rd place at the DESIGN 21-Pedal-to-the-Power competition is this bicycle contraption by Joseph Kim and Jinwook Hwang. The bicycle add-on is called “Sound From Wind” and it is a ceramic replacement for standard bicycle handlebars that turns your bike into a whistling beast.

The sound that comes from this prototype is said to sound like a flute and the neat thing is that you can adjust pitch by fiddling with keys on the handlebars.

I love this idea and I really wish it was in development because I’d seriously buy one. The only thing that sucks is that it’s made of ceramic, which obviously isn’t ready to hold up in my daily grind of biking habits.

Seriously though, how awesome do these things look? I wonder if it would produce sound if it were made of another kind of material (something more durable).

The totally awesome Jawbone Bluetooth headset is on sale at Newegg.com for $69.99!

The Jawbone retails at $119.99. Sure, it’s still pretty expensive at $69.99 for a Bluetooth headset, but when you see what this thing can do, then you’ll know why it’s so great. It essentially cancels out all noise around you when it’s being used.

Check out more videos of the Jawbone in action at their YouTube channel.
