Remember those painted animal faces that seemed to follow you because of a neat little optical illusion? Well, somebody has taken that same trick and used a jack-o-lantern’s face as a substitute instead. Now this jack-o-lantern looks like it’s always looking at you wherever you walk.
Optical illusion of painted animals following you
August 19, 2009 @ 1:21 am
This is a fantastic optical illusion hand-painted into the insides of 3 boxes. The eyes and faces of the dog, cat, and fox seem to follow you wherever you go. Kind of reminds me of that paper dragon illusion that uses the same trick.
Is that blue or is that green?
June 25, 2009 @ 12:30 am

Have a look at this spiral of colors above. Do you see the green and blue spirals going toward the center? Well, what you see as green and blue is actually the same exact color (Discover Magazine has RGB proof). The visual trick here occurs because our brains “see” colors based upon the colors that surround it. In this case the spiral is separated by magenta and orange stripes and the magenta stripes don’t actually go into the green spiral and the orange stripes don’t actually go into the “blue” spiral. It is because of the juxtaposing colors that our brain gets a bit confused as to what color is truly there.
If you don’t see it in the image above, Richard Wiseman has posted an alternate version of the same optical illusion where you can better differentiate the magenta, orange, and green lines (note that the blue lines here are actually the same color as the green ones).

Cube Switchplates turn your wall into an optical illusion
April 10, 2009 @ 1:03 am

The Curiosity Shoppe is selling these cube switchplates for $9. The switchplates fit over normal light switches and wall outlets (US) and give the appearance of a 3D cube.
Fun stuff, but I question whether it’s $9 worth of fun (especially when you can essentially do the same thing with some good markers and art skills.
